Hålistølen at Bygdin is the summer farm for the small dairy farm Sygarden i Hålien located 35 km south west i Høre Ryfoss. During the brief summer in the mountains at 1100 masl the milk cows graze freely and is milked twice a day. Visit us to enjoy a walk in the mountains, pat the cows and try our cheeses, butter and traditional Norwegian sour cream - straight from the summer farm!

Summer farming the traditional way of utilizing the resources of the vast mountain areas for grazing animals. At Hålistølen cows have been grazing for hundreds of years forming the landscape and creating the extremely species rich flora in the area. As part of the summer farming tradition, which is nominated to UNESCO:s World heritage list, we are walking with our heard up to the summer farm from the home farm in the valley. Then we spend around 8 weeks in the mountains before moving back home again. The species rich and energy dense grass makes for a very high quality and tasty milk. Some of that milk we sell to the big dairy Tine, but most of it we use ourselves at our own dairy at the farm. We make a wide range of cheese and dairy products - from traditional summer farm butter, to hard cheese and also grill cheese, ricotta and yoghurt. We sell our products in a small "trust store" where you can pay by Vipps or by card. Our cows are quite friendly and you can pat them if you meet them around the summer farm or in the mountains. Just use common sense, be calm and don't scream or wave at them. If you contact us we can try to arrange for a more organized visit to the summer farm where you can learn more about our cows, our way of farming and maybe try milking a cow yourself :)
