Sygarden i Hålien is a small dairy farm situated at 600 masl with a fantastic view over the valley below. In our dairy we make a wide range of dairy products from our own milk. Visit us to pat the cows, learn more about farm life and biodiversity or buy our products straight from the farm in our "trust store"

We bought the farm in 2018 and moved our whole family with three kids here from a more ordinary life in Sweden. Being a biologist and a pediatrician we had no prior practical experience milking cows so the learning curve has been steep :) We now have 15 cozy cows of the original Norwegian race Vestlandsk fjordfe. We have a strong focus on animal welfare and try our best to facilitate the animals natural behaviour. Therefore we keep our cows outside all year round and we only take them in for milking. The calfs go together with the cows and nurse from them the first 8 weeks. Grazing is also very important for us since it's creating an open landscape and favourable conditions for biodiversity. In summer the cows graze both on species rich pastures around the farm and on our two summer farms higher up in the mountains. Summer farming is nominated as an UNESCO World Heritage and is a traditional way to utilise the scarce resources during the short summer in the high mountains. Our summer farm at Bygdin at 1100 masl has been in continuous use for hundreds of years.

On our farm in Høre we have built our own dairy where we produce a wide range of dairy products from our exceptional quality milk. Our biggest seller is a Norwegian version of the grill cheese halloumi that we call Steik! But we also make feta, ricotta, cottage cheese, sourcream and of course our highly addictive butter. Soon we will also have a few different types of matured hard cheeses!

You can buy our products in our "Trust store" - a fridge located by the main road at the entrance to our farm. Pick the products you want and pay by Vipps, cash or by card (instructions on the fridge). You are also welcome to call and see if it is possible to come to the farm to meet the cows and to learn more about farming life and our cheeses.
