Welcome to us at Værby Gård.
Værby Gård is located in Kana and operates with sheep, cattle, eggs and grain. The farm is run by Manuela and Jakob with our young children Ylvie and Josef. Manuela is a trained meat cutter with several years of experience from a slaughterhouse in Austria. Jakob is a trained agronomist and forest engineer. We operate a versatile farm. We are committed to utilizing the resources we have around us and we utilize them well. We produce most of the food the animals get ourselves, in addition the cows get a lot of potato and turnip waste that is not suitable for human consumption. The feed for the animals consists of barley and field beans that we produce ourselves on the farm. Field beans are a good source of protein that replaces imported soy. In the summer the animals graze on areas around the farm and in the surrounding area.

🐂 Cattle 🐂

We have about 40 suckler cows of the Limousin breed. We are also trying out a breed from Austria and Japanese wagyu to be able to offer a larger selection in the future. All calves stay with their mother and drink milk for 6-8 months. The animals are kept in an airy barn in the winter with lots of good straw to lie on. They are out on pasture from May to October and eat fresh grass.

Our beef is slaughtered at Nortura before we get it back in 4 large pieces. We long-term tenderize and hang it at about 3-4 degrees for over two weeks. This gives extra good and tender meat. Manuela cuts all the meat and everything is vacuum-packed before it is frozen at -20 degrees. All of this is done in premises approved by the Norwegian Food Safety Authority.

🐑 Sheep 🐑

We have 10 sheep of the Norwegian fur sheep and Old Norwegian breed. The sheep also eat straw in the winter like the cows and eat mostly grass and a little concentrate. In April there is lambing and they are released to pasture as soon as the lambs are big enough.

🐔 Freelance chickens 🐔

On August 25 we started egg production.

We have 300 hens living in a mobile hen house. We can move this house around so that the hens always have fresh grass. They have the opportunity to go in and out of the house as they please. In addition to grass, they only get Norwegian-produced concentrate feed. This gives eggs of high quality and very good taste.

🌾 Grain 🌾

We grow grains, oilseeds and beans on about 1200 acres. The areas are run according to the principles of conservation agriculture (in Norwegian called Karbon agro). This means that we work to improve the soil and life in the soil. We have stopped plowing and direct sow all field crops at the same time as sowing catch crops that grow after we have threshed. This means that we store more carbon in the soil and give insects, birds and wildlife better conditions to survive. With us, all fields are green year-round.

We collaborate with Hurum Mølle to make Hurum Mel. It is a small mill that uses millstones to grind the grain, which gives the flour more flavor.
