The farm outlet at Utstein is located in the old sea house located just below Utstein Monastery. In 2019, the farm outlet was nominated for the EU Mies Award - a European prize for contemporary architecture. The restoration of the sea house from around 1850 was supported by the Cultural Heritage Fund, the Norwegian Agency for Cultural Heritage, the Inge Steenslands Foundation, Rogaland County Council and the former Rennesøy Municipality. The sea house was completely restored in the fall of 2017 and was officially opened by the then Minister of Agriculture and Food Jon Georg Dale on May 28, 2018. The sea house is part of Klostergarden/Utstein Gard. Klostergarden has signed the Food Manifesto in Rogaland and is part of the Farmers' Market and the Reko-rings in the food region. The landscape on and around Utstein Gard is characterized by many centuries of grazing and that people have cultivated the land for even longer. Open spaces surrounded by characteristic stone fences have created a typical, historic coastal landscape. The garden was protected in 1999 under the Cultural Heritage Act as the Utstein Cultural Environment. The purpose of the protection was to secure and safeguard the distinctive cultural environment and pastures at Utstein Monastery. The regulations on the protection state that this area has special national value with the cultural-historical, landscape and agricultural elements that give the area its distinctive character.

In 2015 we also started an innovation project where we feed our bulls Norwegian barley to reduce concentrate consumption and thus use minimal amounts of soy from South America.

Utstein Gard is located on Klosterøy about 30 minutes north of the center of Stavanger. The farm is around 1600 acres, and the monastery is located in the middle of the property. Utstein appears in historical sources as a royal farm as early as the 800th century. The monastery itself was built around 1200. The monastery is the only fully preserved medieval monastery in Norway. The buildings and the surrounding area have been used in a variety of ways throughout history. It has been a chieftain's seat, royal farm, monastery, manor house, family farm, and now the monastery itself is run by Museum Stavanger. Utstein Gard has been a family farm since 1700. The production here today is based on generations of knowledge and genuine commitment to agriculture and animal husbandry. Today it is run by the 11th generation of Inger Lise and Anders Schanche Rettedal. On the farm there are around 600 winter-fed sheep, 1200-1500 lambs, 1500 slaughter pigs, 10-30 free-range pigs, 30 suckler cows with a litter and a large cultural landscape to maintain.

In 2015, we released forest pigs here at Utstein for the first time. These are Noroc pigs with a Duroc sire, i.e. ordinary and safe noble pigs from Nortura. What makes these few pigs different is that they roam freely in a forest here at Utstein, from the time they arrive at the farm until they leave. Out there, they eat berries, roots and other things they find in the forest, in addition they have ordinary feed and are finally fed with surplus vegetables and fruit from one of the local grocery stores.

We raise cattle of the Limousin breed here at Klostergarden. The Limousin breed originates from France and was bred for its unique characteristics with regard to meat production. These are suckler cows that go with their calves out to pasture for around six months and then the calves are taken in for further feeding on roughage and supplements. Once the calf is weaned, the cows go outside until they are taken in for slaughter. Limousin meat has fine tenderness and marbling, which gives it juiciness and good taste.

Together with us, they produce good raw materials, lambs that graze exclusively outdoors, on lightly salted sea pasture, throughout the grazing season. We believe this gives the meat a distinctive taste. At the same time, it is good to know that lambs from Klostergarden graze in the unique cultural landscape that you find around the monastery itself and the surrounding areas. We deliver our raw materials to Nortura, who selects the best lambs and, in collaboration with us, turns them into brands that you can buy in stores. Klostergarden® has its origins in Utstein Gard, which surrounds Utstein Kloster, Norway's only preserved medieval monastery. We operate sustainable food production in a protected cultural environment. The farm was protected because Utstein has particular national value with the cultural-historical, landscape and agricultural elements that give the area its distinctive character. It is on this historic land that we at Utstein produce lamb, wild boar and cattle. We also have a unique farm outlet, and offer slow experiences in a historical cultural landscape.

Utstein® Gard is around 1700 acres, of which 420 are cultivated areas, plus leased areas. Around 1400 slaughter pigs are now produced annually, including 10-30 free-range pigs, beef from 30 suckler cows and lamb from around 500 winter-fed sheep. The latter production results in around 800-1300 lambs annually, of which around 700 lambs are sold on the market. There are rich traditions of developing quality food at Utstein, and we promise you safe and good food built on generations of knowledge.

Utstein is a protected cultural environment. There is no public access to the farm, which consists of cultivated land, cultivated pasture and inland fields. Animals graze here year-round. Klostergarden welcomes groups of visitors by appointment, and also offers tailor-made activities and experiences.
