At Elvekanten Cheese Factory in Namskogan, four types of cheese are made, and Gammel Erik is the most famous. The well-aged version of Gammel Erik won a silver medal at the World Championship in Trondheim in 2023.
Elvekanten Ysteri started as a pilot project in Carlos Helguera's kitchen in 2004. With only 12 cheese molds and a homemade cheese press, the results were so successful that Carlos began looking for a place to establish his own cheese factory. He chose the disused community center in Namskogan. There, he converted the basement into a dairy and the main floor into a residence.
The starting point for production has always been Gouda, which Carlos has over time developed into his own variations of the traditional hard cheese – both with and without herbs such as chives, fenugreek and cumin. As of today, the cheese factory has four different cheeses in its range, with the well-aged Gammel-Erik (2 and 5 kg sizes) as the flagship. The cheeses are sold through selected retailers and in the cheese factory's own outlet.
